DICK POWELL
Date: Tuesday 20 February 2007
Location: The Print Works, Manchester
Dick is one of Europe’s best-known designers. After time spent at Manchester Polytechnic and then the Royal College of Art, he went on to form Seymour Powell with his partner Richard Seymour in 1984.
The consultancy has risen to a commanding position on the international stage, with a 58 strong design team servicing a diverse range of clients with projects ranging from mobile phones and domestic appliances to cars, bras and accessories. Clients include Renault, Minolta, Tefal, Casio, Samsung, Dualit, Unilever and Nokia.
With Richard, Dick has appeared on numerous radio and television programmes, raising the importance of design to industry and to the ordinary person in the street. They did an Equinox documentary for Channel 4 called ‘Designing Dream Machines’ and later fronted a series of three programmes called ‘Designs on Your…’
A further documentary called ‘Brand New Bra’ and a series of six
programmes called ‘Better By Design’, all for Channel 4, increased the
profile of design in the media and has helped inspire young people to
take up design careers.
The secret of their success comes down to a design philosophy
that focuses on the emotions that drive people and an ability to
reinvent the wheel by challenging preconceived notions of what
constitutes design.
Dick will be reviewing his career and revealing his inspirations.
